Disney LongBox Reviews: Disney Star vs the Forces of Evil Deep Trouble #1

Over the last year and a half, Disney Star vs the Forces of Evil has become something of a sleeper hit for Disney XD but oddly it did not receive merchandising like its sister shows Gravity Falls and Phineas and Ferb. There is lots of potiental for merchandise but for now we have a limited issue comic book series from our friends at Joe Books.

Just as a small note, this comic takes place after the first season of the show so slight spoilers ahead. This is also the only Disney comic to have talent from the show as both writer and artist of a comic book. Storyboard Artist Zach Marchus serves as writer while Character Designer Devin Taylor with assistant artist Cindy Plourde draws the comic.

Our story begins with Star talking with her mother , the Queen of Mewni about her life on Earth with the Diazes. She then mentions her favourite Diaz, Marco as he pops in her room looking for his lucky red hoodie. Star mentions it is somewhere in the room as they begin cleaning around the mess. They soon find bottles from the Waterfolk Domain containing messages about the fact that one of Star’s intergalactic friends being arrested during her visit there.

They soon find the whole kingdom covered in various graffiti drawn by the rebellious Ponyhead as they soon head to their jail known as the Cannery….how morbid. Turns out she had also been framed for the theft of the kingdom’s tiara, they soon visit her in her cell  as she informs the duo that her trial is tomorrow and if she is found guilty will be forced to stay in the kingdom forever.

They get the help from new character Johnny Blowhole , a former party animal turned lawyer who turns out is not a very good lawyer….. yeah things are not going great for Star Butterfly and her friends.

How will things turn out for Ponyhead ? Well better grab yourself a copy of Disney Star vs the Forces Evil #1 to find out

FINAL THOUGHTS

While I stopped watching the show after Mercury Filmworks abandoned the series after 6 episodes, this was a fun read for me, it’s refreshing to find a comic based on the show made by crew of that very show. You rarely see this these days, Spongebob Comics from Bongo Comics used to in its early days but I believe that is no longer the case.

The art is very eye-popping with its faithfulness to the show and its vibrant colours. Thanks to the writer, every character and their quirks are faithfully recreated including Star’s old habit of chewing on her magic wand when she got nervous.

Hopefully this becomes a full on-going series if sales are strong enough for Joe Books.

See you next time
