Disney LongBox Reviews: Disney Darkwing Duck #6

MIRACLE ON COMIC CON STREET

The Mallard family (and Honker) are on their way on their local comic book convention as a reward for Gosalyn’s recent good behaviour. Darkwing  becomes enraged with the high prices for parking and hot dogs at the con as they soon decide to enter.

They soon walking around the convention hall, Darkwing soon sees that everyone has poor costumes compared to the villains he fights as he soon realizes a lot of the convention goers are indeed dressed like various members of Darkwing Duck’s rogues gallery.

He soon goes on a rampage when he discovers a booth that sells bootleg merchandise based on the villains. He is informed he tried selling Darkwing Duck merchandise last year to no success. Things get worse for him when Launchpad comes out of nowhere with his Gizmoduck cosplay for a costume contest.

Darkwing soon accompanies Honker to a meet and greet with the creators of Math Man and Calculator Boy as a fan gets the artist to draw her a sketch of Splatter Pheonix. Thanks to the mysterious gift he received from a certain Mickey Mouse villain, the pen’s ink brings the artist turned villain back to life.

Disgusted at being inside of a convention , she attempts to sneak out as she gets blocked by the masked marauder himself, Darkwing Duck. She unleashes a classical themed octopus villain on him and attempts to escape within various different comic books scattered around the convention.

What follows is an interesting montage of various comic book art styles as Splatter tries to lose Darkwing and Honker who are close behind. Will she escape and take over St-Canard, will Darkwing ever embrace the comic book fandom ? Will Honker finally meet the creators of Math Man…

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Another solid issue from Sparrow and Silvani, the return of one of the most creative villains from the original Darkwing Duck television series was a shock to me since Splatter Pheonix was one of the few villains that died in a way.

But what sold me on this issue was the different art styles achieved throughout the story when they cross into different comic books from Frank Miller  and Rob Liefeld to Japanese manga. It shows the artistic diversity of James Silvani on top of his usual Easter Eggs and yes I found one of your dinosaurs BTW.

Big shout-outs however to Greyson Orlando who is the brother of the assistant editor Janice Orlando for having provided the CG art for the issue, it is nice to see Darkwing Duck in three dimensions. Hopefully he returns in the future.

But sadly, looks like Disney Darkwing Duck might get cancelled due to poor sales of the issues so please go out and buy the new Trade Paperback that just came out recently, every copy sold makes a difference.
