Lin-Manuel Miranda on “How Far I’ll Go”

Lin-Manuel Miranda is going for an EGOT at this year’s Academy Awards ceremony. He’s won Tonys and Grammys for In the Heights and Hamilton and won an Emmy for writing the 2014 opening number at the Tony Awards. Now, “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s hit film Moana is nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars. Miranda has been a part of the film’s process from very early on, even before Hamilton began rehearsing. The time he spent working on the project shows in the heartfelt lyrics and memorable tunes, something that Miranda spoke about in a special Moana featurette.

Being on of several songwriters being interviewed for the film, Miranda accepted the offer and hopped on a plane to New Zealand where work on the film began. The Moana team was already there and Miranda was able to join them in “…sort of really soaking up the music, the musical world of, the musical heritage of this part of the world”.

It’s hard to believe a Disney movie without Miranda’s influence. He, along with Auli’i Cravalho, will be performing the Oscar nominated song at the upcoming Academy Awards.
