The Mulan Live Action Remake Won’t Include Any Songs

With the live action version of “Beauty and the Beast” hitting cinemas this weekend, some news on the upcoming remake of Mulan has come out via an interview with the director Niki Caro, with Moviefone.

Moviefone: So I was talking to Sean Bailey and he was telling me about your approach to “Mulan.” It sounds great!

Niki Caro: What did he say?

Moviefone: He said that it’s going to be very muscular and a Ridley Scott approach. But I wanted to hear from you what your approach is going to be.

Niki Caro: Well I’m not going to contradict Sean. His sensibility and mine for the material is right in sync. It’s a big, girly martial arts epic. It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving.

Moviefone: That sounds awesome.

Niki Caro: Yeah!

Moviefone: But from what I understand, no songs?

Niki Caro: Yes, from what I understand, no songs right now, much to the horror of my children.

Moviefone: I’ve heard that the deleted scene where the Huns sneak in via a Chinese dragon is going to be in this movie. Is that true?

Niki Caro: I could not possibly comment upon that.

Our Take

It does look like Disney could be trying something different with Mulan, especially without featuring no songs, which would change the whole feel of the movie and make it very different.  While we’ve seen a few different variations in other live action remakes, no including any songs does sound a risk.  However he did say “right now”, so they could still add some later.

What do you think of there being no songs in Mulan?
