BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW

Our first story begins at some point before the events of Star Wars : The Force Awakens as Rey sets out to accomplish collecting junk to earn rations from her tyrannical boss Unkar. But on her latest mission, she gets ambushed by a group of sand thieves after some com links found on an abandoned ship. The fight results in the ship getting blown up as Rey leaves on her vehicle leaving the thieves behind.
Once she returns, she learns it was a diversion as Unkar has been kidnapped by some Off-Worlders led by Zool Zendiat. She learns they were after a defective droid Rey found and sold months ago as a fellow boss named Krynodd steps in to conquer Unkar’s territory. Now its up to Rey to save both Unkar and her home from being overrun by other more threatening criminals.
TALES FROM WILD SPACE – STOP THIEF
WRITER: CAVAN SCOTT ART : JON SOMMARIVA
This is the side story of Star Wars Adventures about a young boy on a spaceship learning about adventures from some of the best or unknown Star Wars characters out there. There are two Tales From Wild Space stories in this volume.
The robot of the ship Crafter has had enough of Emil’s pet lizard stealing his laser welder again as he scolds the young Master for having bad tastes in pets. Emil tells his droid Boo about a story he had heard once a long time ago.
The story is about an old diner during the Republic era called Dex’s on Coruscant as not all of his clients were honest as a scaly creature steals something from a customer sitting at the diner’s counters. Unfortunately for her, the person she stole from is none other than Obi Wan Kenobi. Kenobi starts chasing her around town as the thief reports back to her crime partner but gets busted by Kenobi, who reveals she had only stolen a paperweight.
TALES FROM WILD SPACE – THE FLAT MOUNTAIN ON YAVIN
WRITERS : ELSA CHARRETIER AND PIERRICK COLINET
ARTIST : ELSA CHARRETIER
The ship is once again having problems as the main characters try to figure out what caused the latest malfunction as Crater suspects the fuel cell while Boo says its the hyper drive generator that caused the problem. Emil runs in the room as once again this reminds him of a story he had heard before.
This one takes place sometime during the original trilogy as Leia is on another mission for the Rebels as the base gets attacked by the Imperial force. Leia informs them that one of their own Evian Verlaine had infiltrated a Imperial Star Destroyer along with a small team as they try to over ride the controls of the ship.
They find out the controls are locked in place so that the entire base would be destroyed sometime in the next five minutes as the men try to find out how to shut it down as Evaan gets ignored and decides to take matters into her own hands. Will she succeed ? Read the volume to find out.
CONCLUSION
After reading Star Wars Adventures Volume One, I find it a good addition for the younger Star Wars fans out there who cant read the Marvel Star Wars comics due to its more mature subject matter. The art is bright and colorful with good writing from the two writers featured in this collection. My only real negative with this series so far is that the Tales of Wild Space stories feel like un-needed filler to teach morals or lessons.
I am sure that having stories only featuring the main Star Wars characters only would work out better than having one story with an iconic character and one story featuring bridging sequences of characters you wouldn’t care about that much. It feels unnecessary to have Emil and his crew of robots around to explain the story, I would like them to just feature the stories themselves.
