24: Legacy: Rules of Engagement Review
IDW Publishing have brought together all 5 issues of the 24: Legacy: Rules Of Engagement series, which started in April 2017. 24: Legacy is a reboot of the original Fox TV series, featuring a new leading character, Eric Carter, and this comic book focuses on telling two major stories from this characters past, one based in Washington and one in Iraq.
The Iraq story sees Eric Carter trying to lead his squadron to safety, while the other story is based in his home town, Washington, dealing with his brother, the police and his criminal past.
I am a huge 24 fan, I watched every episode of the series featuring Kiefer Sutherland, however personally, I wasn’t a huge fan of 24: Legacy, it just never felt like it was “24” and more like completely different TV show, but just linked to the original to try to get more people to try it out. And that’s why the TV series lost over 75% of its audience within a couple of episodes, as it never represented what fans wanted from the series.
And that is my issue with this comic book, since I didn’t enjoy the series, it made this comic book harder to enjoy, it feels like they tried to make the character more likeable and make out this Eric is more interesting that he is, but I just didn’t connect with him.
The art style is a little hit and miss, there isn’t too much detail on the characters and it suffers from a too simplistic design that makes characters look too alike.
However the flipping constantly between the two locations and time periods, how the artists used a good design style of using the bright colours to show they are in Iraq, made it easy to know exactly where the story is, but it still felt like it jumped around way too much and I got a little confused.
OVERALL: 24: Legacy: Rules of Engagement is a solid tie-in, it helps give more backstory to the main character, but its just a shame this wasn’t out during the show airing on Fox to benefit from the hype around the series. If you enjoyed the series, this might be worth checking out but sadly I just didn’t connect with it.
