Alien: Covenant Sequel Rumored To Be Canceled By Fox
Following the failure of Alien: Covenant at the US box office earlier this year, taking in just $74 million, it looks like the sequel has been cancelled by Fox.
According to a Blu-Ray forum post by member HumanMedia
The sequel to Covenant was originally due to start preproduction this month in Sydney. After the box office results filming was cancelled, and a warehouse storage unit full of stuff was auctioned off a few months ago. So the original plan of pumping out another quickly has definitely changed with no immediate plans for anything.
Since this is a forum post, we should considered this a rumor, but from Fox’s perspective the movie was a disappointment. The movie was set to go into product in the summer of 2018, and while Fox has stated that its business as usual while Disney purchase 21st Century Fox, it’ll be interesting to find out if the Alien franchise is put on hold or if they try to finish off the series with a final movie before the takeover.
In a recent interview with The Toronto Sun Sir Ridley Scott spoke about the series saying:
What’s coming next? Are Daniels and Tennessee from Covenant going to make it?
I think they have to. There’s no reason why Alien should now not be on the same level for fans as Star Trek and Star Wars. So I think the next step as to where we go is, do we sustain the Alien (series) with the evolution of the beast or do we reinvent something else? I think you need to have an evolution on this famous beast because he’s the best monster ever, really.
Are you still planning more Alien movies?
I would like to; they’re crazy if they don’t. David is a fantastic villain. I love what (Michael Fassbender) did in Covenant. But it’s hard, dude. We lifted Alien out of a ditch and made Prometheus.
