Phoenix Resurrection: The Return Of Jean Grey #1 Review

Marvel are bringing many of their popular X-Men characters back with the Legacy line and this mini series is all about bringing Jean Grey and the Phoenix back into the fold.

The X-Men are investigating a strange occurrence involving children floating in the air with blood coming out of their ears, which leads to three teams heading off to different locations on Earth to investigate more.  From here they run into problems, including a version of Wolverine from the past.

We also see Jean Grey working in a diner as a waitress and dating Scott Summers, showing that she is living a normal life, though the Phoenix is never too far away.  This could be a alternative universe, a dream, heaven or something else.

With this being the first issue of this series, there are plenty of questions raised and nothing answered, we know nothing more at the end of issue than at the start and hopefully as the series moves on, we find out what is actually going on.  If your a hardcore X-Men fan, you might pick up on many of the little points but for newer readers, much of this will go straight over their heads, which is a shame since mini series are usually good for newbies to jump in on for a single story arc.

There are plenty of different X-Men characters involved in this series, we’ve got Old Man Logan, Colossus, Rogue and many more, but none of these characters seem to do too much and it might have helped having a smaller cast.  There are a few small action moments in this issues, but it never gets out of first gear.

The artwork is very interesting, it’s got some vibrate colours and plenty of detail to show off all the different characters and locations.

OVERALL: This issue helps set up the rest of the series but also suffers from leaving a reader with lots of questions,  I’m interested to see where this goes in the later issues but it does suffer from trying to do too much in too short a space, but bringing back a well-known character from the X-Men is always going to be popular and I enjoyed reading it, so issue 1 did exactly what it was suppose to do.

REVIEW SCORE: 7 out of 10
