Avengers #678 Review

The fourth issue of the “No Surrender” storyline sees the two Avengers teams taking on the loads of villains, resulting in major chaos.   This issue has lots of action, with two epic battles going on at once, it can be difficult to work out what is going on, since there are so many moving parts.  And that’s what’s a little disappointing with this issue for me, as the villains are just thrown in, so it’s hard to work out who they are.  This is the problem with having such a huge cast, with so many Avengers, a large collection of villains for them to fight is needed.

However we do get to learn a little more about what’s going on and the Avengers are starting to catch on to the game being played.  With the Grandmaster becoming a bigger player yet still taking orders from a mysterious figure in the shadows.

This series does benefit from being a weekly series because the plot is moving slowly, which works ok since it’s never too long from a last instalment.

Again the artwork is fantastic and it’s easy to see why this series is one of the main pillars of Marvel comic books at the moment.  There is tons of detail and the colours jump off the screen, especially when the Human Torch is on the page.

OVERALL:

No Surrender is no doubt going to be an epic story, but now we are a few issues in, the plot has slowed down and this means this issue has very little to move the story along.  My big issue with this issue is how confusing the battles get, I often had to flip back and read it again, which is a shame, since I’m really interested to see where this story is going, but as we get closer to the middle arc, it might be a while before we find out anything.  But it still has some fantastic artwork and some awesome fight scenes.   It’s an epic issue, but it’s struggling under the weight of its own cast size.

REVIEW SCORE: 7 out of 10
