Star Wars: The Last Jedi – DJ #1 Review

Marvel have released a new one shot telling the story of DJ in the run up to his appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.  The story takes place on the planet of Canto Bight, showing how DJ is a criminal and is trying to scam money from the casino owners.

With DJ being one of the most interesting new characters introduced in “The Last Jedi”, this issue does try to showcase him, pushing how he is just focused on himself and how with all the bigger issues of the Galaxy, there are still people just living their lives, without a thought to what’s good or bad.  And I think DJ brings a unique take makes him more appealing.

The artwork is fine, it’s a little more simplistic than I’ve seen in most Marvel comics, especially as DJ doesn’t look that much like Benecio Del Toro.  Compared to the photorealistic artwork in the main Star Wars series, this just feels a little unimpressive.

While the comic does have a small chase scene and a few fight scenes, they are all over quickly.  While they allow DJ to continue to show his sneaky side, we know he would be caught eventually, which is one of the biggest issues with the new Star Wars comic books as so restricted to do anything major.  While Disney probably sees better returns for comics featuring established characters, non-movie characters seem to have much more freedom in doing something original.

OVERALL:

If your coming to this comic expecting to learn more about DJ, you’ll be disappointed, since we learn very little about him or his past, since the events of the comic only take place maybe hours before the events of “The Last Jedi”.  It’s a fine one shot but nothing really happens.
