Star Wars: Thrawn #1 Review
The latest Star Wars comic book mini series is Thrawn, which is spread across six parts and is based on the Timothy Zahn’s New York Times best-selling novel. Thrawn is one of the most interesting Star Wars novels I’ve read (check out my review), as it takes one of the more unknown villains of the Star Wars universe and gives us some history into the character and his rise through the Empire.
As with any novel turned into anything, it loses some of the detail in the translation, while comics can’t tell all those small little details, the artwork does a good job of setting the scene and painting a great picture of what’s going on. I really like the way the artists made Thrawn look on the planet, showing him as a real “wildman”.
The relationship between Thrawn and his aide, Cadet Vanto, is a centre story point of the book and it’s told very well in this comic. Plus how they represent his strategy skills in a card game and in a street fight, all help push the idea of who Thrawn is.
I also felt the comic did a great way of representing the Emperor and Anakin Skywalker in the first issue, instantly bringing the story into the main Star Wars lore and establishing its place in the time line before the Rebels show.
OVERALL:
Since I’ve read the book and know where this series is going, I’m not going to continue reading the rest of the series, however if you haven’t read the novel and want a great version of it, I’d say get in on this series now as it’s a great story with some fantastic artwork.
REVIEW SCORE: 8 out of 10
