Avengers #688 Review

The “No Surrender” Avengers event is coming close to the end in issue #688, as the Heroes get ready for the big battle with the Challenger. This sees Quicksilver become a major aspect of the story as he runs around the globe to work out how to bring the other heroes out of stasis, just in time for the big epic fight.

Seeing the Hulk back in action and bringing the fight to the Challenger was a fun moment, though I wish it had gone a little longer. The whole issue ends on a great cliffhanger, which seems to finally deliver that big “Avengers” feeling.

It’s a little disappointing that we’ve spent the last 3 months reading a weekly issue, only for the writers to bring back all the heavy hitters to finish the job, which shows how the “B” team of Avengers left over have pretty much got nothing done! However I do think Quicksilver showed the ultimate dedication to being a hero to rescue everyone. I also loved the interaction with his sister, Scarlet Witch.

This great series is getting close to the end and this issue helps deliver the “A-Team” back into the fold to give us that big fight finish, but its a shame this series has been going so long, I love the weekly format but much of this story could have been done months ago and parts skipped to make it much more snappy.

OVERALL:

This issue is all about getting the band back together and I really enjoyed how the writers did it, with Quicksilver standing out as a true hero.
