Megacon Orlando Report – Top 3 Coolest Off-The-Wall Things To Buy!

There’s one thing you are certain to find at any Comic-Con style event that will have you pulling out your wallet – comics.

While certainly Megacon Orlando is no exception:

$63,000 for this 1st appearance of Spider-Man

There was also a lot of UNIQUE items you could find. Here are a few of our favorites.

3. Vintage toys.

Ok, so toys might be the next most popular item for sale at a Comic Con so this feels a BIT like cheating, but just bear with us. At Megacon Orlando this weekend there seemed to be more than the usual high-priced-graded-and-never-played-with toys that we’re used to seeing… that’s right there was actual used toys. The kind that were likely bought in the 1980s and 1990s, opened and played with, and then shoved into a closet until forgotten about – the stuff Toy Story movies are made of.

Vintage Star Wars is so cool right now.

These figures, if still mint in their package, would fetch hundreds to thousands of dollars, but instead here they are for a much smaller price – $10 – $60 dollars for some really great figures. These are historic figures that would be proud to be on display in anyone’s collection – don’t skip on them next time you end up at a convention.

2. Film cells.

Speaking with this particular purveyor of goods was a bit like talking to a man who sells flip cell phones – sure people still want to buy them, but they just aren’t being manufactured.

This entire booth was FILMED with film cells. In keeping with the theme the photo below shows off his Star Wars film cells for sale, but there were some from other classic films including a few rare Disney movies including Runaway Brain.

70mm film cells for sale.

These film cells were taken from 70mm film stock, cut into pieces to show a variety of characters or set pieces, then sealed in this clear acrylic with a description of the scene. One man that was there at the time of my visit was pouring over scene and scene to find the best shot of Leia that he could.

“They’re all unique” he said, gleefully as he went through them one by one. “That’s why I like these so much, not anyone else is really going to have one identical!”

However, much like the now-cancelled “Piece of Disney Movie History” pin line sold down the road at Walt Disney World discovered, not many modern films are EVER translated to 70mm film. The ones that are still shown on this traditional format are usually kept for preservation, and since dozens of these film reels aren’t making their way out of the production houses it means cells like these will likely not be available much longer.

At only $15.00 it’s a piece of movie nostalgia you can own rather inexpensively.

1. Upcycled freshness.

The ETSY crowd is creeping into the geekdom that is Megacon and customers couldn’t be happier.

Artist Alley is CHOCK FULL of cutesty designs that take even the darkest of characters (Darth Maul, Ghost Rider and Chernabog to name a few) and turned them into cutesy designs adorning all sorts of stickers, buttons, artwork, and even plush dolls. These creators are using old chalkboards, sheets and even pallets to create art that is more than just saving the planet – it’s beautiful.

In addition to that was a clothing retailer that was upcycling vintage clothing by adding touches of Disney flair – like adding a piece of the classic C3PO bedsheets to a shirt to add a pocket to a plain blue t-shirt, or plastering a Buzz Lightyear on the back of a camo jacket.

You want it… you can admit it

The effect is doubly nice – a piece that feels vintage and hip at the same time!

Places like Megacon Orlando are full of these artists, most of them finding something they love and turning into a way to make some extra cash (although not as much as you’d think, prices for the upcycled tshirts were a very reasonable $20!).

What kind of weird and crazy merchandise have YOU seen at a con? Tell us in the comments!
