Frozen: The Broadway Musical Soundtrack Review

The colossus juggernaut, Frozen, continues to attract audiences as Disney bring it to the stage and this album features all the big songs we know and love, plus throw in some new original tracks.

All the big heavy hitters from the movie are included like “Fixer Upper”, “Do You Want To Build A Snowman”, “For The First Time In Forever”, “Love Is A Open Door”, “In Summer” and obviously “Let It Go”.

These are all perfectly performed and while they might sound slightly different to the movie due to different actors playing the parts, they are extremely well done. These songs will no doubt get back into your head when listening to this album and it’s exactly what I want from a Frozen musical. These tracks are what the vast majority of people will want to see and hear, which I think Disney understand.

With many new songs being added for the musical version, to help stretch out the story and to deliver that “Musical” experience, some of the songs help move along the story and even if you’ve never seen the movie, this album explains everything that is going on.

I especially liked the earlier songs with a younger Elsa and Anna, as it helps set the tone of a loving pair of sisters plus Anna’s cheekier side, who seems to be obsessed with butts! Which will no doubt make everyone laugh each time they hear it.

One of the biggest new tracks is “Monster”, which is a huge number by Elsa, as she explains her thoughts of being a “villain” but also a moment when she proves she is the hero as she wants to just protect people. This track could be lifted straight out of any musical and is certainly a highlight of the newer tracks.

Many of the newer tracks bring in elements of the more well known Frozen songs, like “True Love” and really add to the overall experience and boost it into a different place. Disney have seemed to have made Frozen better with this version.

Going off this album, Frozen: The Musical looks set to be a massive success, as the team behind it haven’t just rushed into throwing in random songs to stretch it out, but tried to improve it. While some newer tracks help add storytelling elements to the overall presentation, they help develop the characters we all know and love.

OVERALL: Disney have managed to take a excellent movie full of classic songs and turned it into a fantastic musical experience. I can’t wait to see this on the stage in person one day, it’s got all the amazing classics and then raised the bar with plenty of new original and impressive songs.

REVIEW SCORE: 9 out of 10

  • I just listened to it after reading your review. I’m not quite as impressed. Maybe it’s because I have the movie songs as a template, but I didn’t much care for either the Hans or Anna singers in this. Elsa and Kristoff were good, though. The song by the shopkeeper was… odd. This came in more as a mixed bag for me, and I don’t think it will replace any songs from the original. “Monster” might have some legs to it, though.
