Disney Movie Insiders Gets Thumbs Down from Fans

In August, the 13-year-old Disney Movie Rewards program announced that it was rebranding as Disney Movie Insiders, “a place where new fans and super fans unite.” So far, the only evidence of fans uniting is in their mutual disappointment with the new website.

Things started off wonderfully, with Disney Movie Rewards (DMR) holding a “moving sale” in early September. The amount of points needed for most prizes were slashed significantly.

DMR was scheduled to go down on September 25, with Disney Movie Insiders launching on the next day. The day after the planned start, they tweeted that Disney was “still working on the… program to ensure a magical experience.” Then silence, until 10:14 pm October 2.

Site glitchy, no physical items yet

The new site is full of glitches: it doesn’t work on older browsers, multiple users can’t sign in with their Disney account, two users can’t change their address, and even when it does work, many users are reporting that their unentered DMR codes are “invalid”.

Lots of features are gone, like your redemption history and a quiz that would give you 5 bonus points each month.

A promised app, the stated reason for the change, has yet to launch.

What can you redeem for, so far?

So far, the only things you can redeem for are desktop wallpapers, shopDisney.com coupons and eGift cards, movie ticket upgrades, a D23 Gold Family Membership, or a private tour of Walt Disney Studios. Some have noted how unsorted the rewards are on the site.

In their September 6 email, Disney admitted that the site would relaunch initially with limited items, stating that “while we get the new program up and running, some rewards that require shipping will be added back at a later date.”

But the lack of things like DVDs, figurines, and books is proving off-putting for users, and the site’s Twitter account isn’t responding to distressed users.

Are you a Disney Movie Rewards/Disney Movie Insiders member? What do you think about the transition?
