Disney + and the Rise of Baby Yoda
I’m probably not going to get Disney Plus, for purely monetary reasons. My family already has Netflix and Hulu, so it feels like it doesn’t make sense. With that said, I’ve heard good word of mouth about the service, from the nostalgia shows of our childhood to the new content.
Winning the Crowd
Disney despite its power has stiff competition with creating an exclusive video streaming service. Netflix and Hulu are two of the top companies in the oligarchy, to say nothing of Amazon. We are concerned that this increased competition will reduce the reasons why most of us prefer Netflix to network television, in that we won’t get barred from channels.
What is the solution? Sell big on content. Disney has to give us a reason to join, and to fire up the social media crowd. That is how we got the Mandalorian, and baby Yoda content. In fact, baby Yoda is what matters more to people these days because of the cute ears and the aura of mystery, if my podcast queue and Twitter feeds are any indications.
Nostalgia is another seller. We really miss our 90s shows, from the utterly superior New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh to Darkwing Duck and Recess. People can watch Ducktales from the beginning and compare it to the very awesome reboot. What’s more, we can do it without relying on rather obscure distributions. It is hard to find the Pooh Bear episodes.
This seems to have been a strong start. I wonder how Disney+ will go, and wonder why Disney didn’t just negotiate to buy Netflix. Meanwhile, I’m going to be avoiding the Frozen news. Life’s too short after all and the holidays are coming up.
