Orlando Dining Review: Voodoo Doughnut

When I was down at Walt Disney World last month, one night my Tampa friends Stephanie, Jaqi, and Jaqi’s family hung out with me one afternoon at Disney Springs. Towards the evening, we were kicking around ideas for what to eat for dinner. Someone mentioned Voodoo Doughnut over at Universal City Walk (basically Universal’s version of Disney Springs). Since I had never been, and have heard nothing but amazing things about it, we all piled into the van and headed over to Universal.

Voodoo Doughnut is a pastry company that originated in Portland, Oregon. Their first location opened in 2003. Today, they have nine locations in five states, including the location at Universal City Walk. Their eclectic motif and unique flavor combinations has made them a very popular spot. This night was no exception.

The line was wrapped around the inside of the shop, and carried itself outside quite a bit. Fortunately, the staff inside knew what they were doing and the line moved pretty fast. Since the shop and Universal City Walk was pretty crowded, Stephanie (who was staying at my room for the night) and I decided to get our doughnuts packed up so we could enjoy them when we got back to my Disney Vacation Club resort.

These are the doughnuts we got (from left to right):

  • Chuckles
  • Bacon Maple Bar
  • Voodoo Doll
  • Blueberry Cake
  • The Universal Orangecicle

For descriptions of these doughnuts, and to see others that they offer, you can visit the Voodoo Doughnut website.

I am a big fan of blueberry cake doughnuts in general, so I had to get that one, and it was my favorite out of the bunch. Stephanie’s favorite has always been the bacon maple bar, and I agree that it was good, just not my first choice. The one called “Chuckles” was very chocolaty, but very good. I found the Orangecicle one a bit on the sweet side, and both Stephanie and I agreed that the raspberry filling of the Voodoo Doll. I mainly got it because it’s a great doughnut to photograph for social media, especially when you slice it open.

Poor Voodoo Doll!

Overall, will I go back to Voodoo Doughnut? If I find myself near a location (either at Universal Citywalk or elsewhere), then absolutely. Most of the time, I do not have a car with me when I am down in Orlando, and the time it takes to drive over there, walk from the parking garage, wait for the doughnuts, and do the return walking and driving wouldn’t be worth it if I was there solo. However, if friends want to go and I can enjoy that time spending it with them, then sure!

Or how about they just open a location in Disney Springs…. would make things a LOT easier. Hahahahaha.

Have you ever been to a Voodoo Doughnut location? If so, what are your favorite flavors? I am always up for trying something new the next time I make it over there. Let me know in the comments below.
