Canada: Calgary, Mississauga Disney Stores closing this month

Bad news for residents of two Canadian cities. The Disney Store is closing its locations in Mississauga’s Square One Shopping Centre, and Rocky View’s CrossIron Mills, just outside Calgary.

The store will close “on or before March 23.”

Canada has 18 locations of The Disney Store, so the country is getting off relatively easily. Calgary has a second location of the chain, at Southcentre Mall. It will remain open.

Most locations in Canada had been renovated during the Imagination Park era, or more recently, indicating that they were profitable. Square One was one of the first two locations in Canada to receive the upgrade.

CrossIron Mills is a relatively new mall, having opened only in 2009.

In contrast, the location at Square One Shopping Centre opened in April 1993. It’s always had pride of place in the Centre Court of the mall, for the last 27 years, 11 months. It’s absence will be very noticeable. The mall also hosted the 20-city Hercules Mega Mall Tour and The Hunchback of Notre Dame‘s mall tour. Just a few years ago, it was considered the most profitable store in Canada.
