National Polka Dot Day // New Minnie Mouse-Inspired Artwork To Be Unveiled At ‘Mickey: The True Original Exhibition’
As part of the continued celebration of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse’s 90th Anniversary, a new art piece inspired by Minnie Mouse will be unveiled and installed at the ‘Mickey: The True Original Exhibition’ in New York City on National Polka Dot Day January 22 in celebration of Minnie’s signature style.
Minnie Mouse is one of the world’s most recognized characters, delighting kids and families for generations. Loved for her infectious, upbeat personality, Minnie’s iconic style has also made her a muse for fashion designers, artists and fans around the globe which is why each year Disney encourages fans to wear their dots and celebrate Minnie’s incomparable influence on National Polka Dot Day.
‘Mickey: The True Original Exhibition’ is an immersive, pop-up art exhibition inspired by Mickey’s status as a ‘true original’ and his global impact on popular culture and art over the past 90 years. Curated by Los Angeles-based designer Darren Romanelli, the exhibition features exclusive original artwork from contemporary artists including Kenny Scharf, Katherine Bernhardt, Amanda Ross-Ho, Shinique Smith and many more. The experience captivates the senses to surprise and delight guests, evoking the inspiration, creativity, and true original spirit of Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
Artist Alake Shilling, a Los Angeles-based painter and ceramicist, created the Minnie-inspired piece exclusively for the Exhibition, where it will be integrated into the “Burst into Color” room. Known for her heavily textured works that borrow elements of nature and memories to produce psychedelic fable worlds, Alake said on her inspiration behind the piece of art; “My inspiration for my Minnie Mouse painting is my love for Disney’s Silly Symphony. I wanted to create a painting with Minnie Mouse as the focus, but I wanted the painting to have the same up-beat energy as a Silly Symphony animation.”
Fans will have the chance to see Alake’s new piece and meet the artist at a special event at ‘Mickey: The True Original Exhibition’ on National Polka Dot Day, January 22. Guests who attend the evening are encouraged to share their dots in true #MinnieStyle. A limited number of tickets – 90 – are available now at https://www.showclix.com/event/mickey-true-originalUsQzQMo.
