Custom Corner: Ink & Paint Series

Custom Corner: Ink & Paint Series

Classic is back this week with these throwback figures.  The series, created by Craig Larson, features characters from all over the Disney universe, from Sorcerer Mickey to the Toy Story martians to Winnie the Pooh.  Featuring a dotted pop art style with a worn retro vibe, these customs are sure to bring back some good Disney memories.

After collecting his first vinylmation as a fun memento of a very special Disney World trip, Larson was hooked.  His collection led to the discovery of custom vinyls, and after some experimentation Larson completed his first custom in December of 2011, learning from his mistakes and other custom artists along the way.

This particular series was a long time coming, taking over a year to complete. Inspired by the vibrant old-school look of the “official” Vinylmation Ink & Paint series, released late spring of last year, Larson wanted to improve on some of the designs.  “…as great as the series was, I couldn’t help but feel like Daisy got slighted,” he noted.  He created the first figure in this style originally for his own collection, and after receiving positive feedback and suggestions for other characters to try the style on, the series was born.

With the series now complete, Larson is able to look back on his work with pride, but not without forgetting the community that helped him on his way.  “Nearly everyone in the custom Vinylmation community has been super helpful and friendly, offering suggestions and hints on how to improve, as well as inspiration and encouragement to be the best artist I could be,” Larson said.  “I’ve gained friends and admire the talented individuals in the group.”  This sense of community that Disney in general has really grown to encapsulate is reflected in the classic feel of these figures, like a favorite game that as adults we still look back on and smile: it’s a little worn, a little battered, but well-loved by all.
