Disney UK Cooks Up Film Classic Dishes on YouTube

At Walt Disney World, “the grey stuff” is a mousse dessert at Be Our Guest. But if you actually slow down the film, it’s a cracker topping.

Disney UK’s YouTube channel has launched a 12-episode cooking series, featuring Martyn Odell of the web series The Lagom Chef, which attempts to create dishes worth of the films they’re sourced from.

As someone repulsed by edible fungus, his answer of mushrooms and a shallot is repulsing? But nevertheless, the segment is fun.

Strangely, only “the grey stuff” went viral with 215,000 views, the tamales from Coco getting 18K, and Snow White’s gooseberry pie and Inside Out‘s broccoli pizza topping each getting slightly more than 1K.

Intriguingly, the pizza changes from country-to-country. Cynthia Lusk was director of international production for the film, and reveals that the Japanese are generally fond of broccoli, so green bell peppers were substituted in.

Odell also tours markets to pick ingredients, and visits chefs for inspiration and advice. The set decoration also changes from episode-to-episode, with completely new looks for each episode. Just like their trivia game show, which I profiled a few weeks ago, it’s a surprisingly ambitious creation for what could just be a marketing channel.
