Mickey Mouse #2 Review
Mickey Mouse returns for his second issue (or 311th since it originally launched) and features 3 stories, the main story is called “The Sound-Blot Plot” from from Italian Topolino 2784 (2009), What’s Cookin’? from Mickey Mouse Sunday comic strip (1950) and The W’angler from British Mickey Mouse Annual 4 (1933). So there is a nice mix of a more modern Mickey and a couple of classics including one from before World War 2, which is nice for Mickey fans to get a snapshot of Mickey in different eras.
This issue also has a special variant Fantasyland cover which features Mickey, Donald and Goofy on top of the Matterhorn, with It’s A Small World in the background.
The first story called the “Sound-Blot Plot” sees Mickey gain super hearing, which causes him some distress as he gets used to his new super power and quickly starts to use his ability to track down crooks. There are appearances by Minnie, Horace and Goofy in this story that add a nice touch. The story is nicely all wrapped up in the single episode, making it perfect for younger readers to pick up and go in one sitting. It also does a good job of giving Mickey a more modern adventure and gaining the super hearing power is handled very well with the side effects shown in detail.
The W’angler short is just a single page of classic Mickey from the 30’s and I think this is a great addition to the comic, as it allows Mickey’s hertiage to be shown off and is very different from the main story within this comic. It’s a nice touch to see this included in the monthly comic.
The “What’s Cookin'” story is another simple one page story from the 50’s which features Ellsworth the crow, who runs away from Goofy, thankfully its only a single page of the comic as it wasn’t the strongest and I’ll be totally honest, a character I wasn’t aware of before this comic.
Overall, “Sound-Blot Plot” is a great modern story with super hero/crime fighting aspects to it, mean its going to be much more attractive to today’s audience and I enjoyed the story. I also enjoyed the classic 30’s “W’angler” short but the “What’s Cookin” short wasn’t that enjoyable for me. But a very good read for Mickey Mouse fans, Mickey Mouse #2 is out on the 22nd July at all good comic book shops and is priced at $3.99.
