Disney Top The US Box Office In 2017

Disney has had another very successful year at the box office, with $2.27 Billion at the box office in the US, marking it’s second year in a row at the top.

With huge hits like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Beauty and the Beast, Thor: Ragnarok and many others like Coco, Cars 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy, it held a 21.3% market share as of Christmas Day, which is expected to keep rising with Last Jedi ticket sales.

Disney have released fewer movies than the other studios, but many of those hits have been huge.  Warner Brothers have brought in $2.02 billion, which is 18.9% of the market.

Disney pulled in $504 million for “Beauty and the Beast” reboot, with “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” sliding in with $389.8 million, followed by “Thor: Ragnarok” with $309.1 million, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” with $172.6 million, “Coco” with $167.3 million, and “Cars 3” with $152.9 million.

One of the big factors going forward is with Disney’s deal with Fox, who is the fourth biggest Hollywood Studio this year, with $1.37 billion and a 12.8% share, which came from 38 movies including Logan, DreamWorks Animation’s “The Boss Baby”, “Hidden Figures”, “War for the Planet of the Apes”, “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” and “Murder on the Orient Express”.

This could be where Disney feels there is some growth by adding more titles and franchises,  especially smaller titles that can be released on a different label away from the Disney brand.

Disney also had a hand in with Sony for “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, which was the fifth highest earner of the year with $334 million.
