Sphero Discontinuing Its Disney Licensed Products

While Sphero had some huge hits with their interactive toys including BB8 and R2D2 from Star Wars, Lightning McQueen and Spider-Man, these toys have now been discontinued due to a slow down in sales.

CEO Paul Berberian told The Verge, that they would be moving away from creating licences toys, saying “When you launch a toy, your first year’s your biggest,” he says. “Your second year’s way smaller, and your third year gets really tiny.”

They also found that playtime with the toys decreased over time, compared to their non-branded educational projects, which the company is now focused on. These educational products also are more profitable since Disney aren’t taking a cut.

App support for the existing toys will continue for “at least two years, if not longer.”
