Review: Mickey All Stars Graphic Novel

Mickey All-Stars is truly a unique book, it started life as a project in France from publisher Glenat whose past projects we have covered on the site in the past. ( Mickey’s Crazy Adventures amongst others). The project was created to celebrate Mickey Mouse’s 90th anniversary back in 2018 combining the works of 40 of the most iconic American, French and Italian artists together into one massive story dealing with various art styles.

MICKEY ALL-STARS

Original Publisher: Glenat (France)

Published in North America by Fantagraphics

Translator: David Gerstein

Writers and Artists: VARIOUS

STORY:

The way they combined the stories together is truly unique. The overarching plot penned by Disney legend Giorgio Cavazzano and Joris Chamblain has our favourite mouse venturing into a haunted house at a Mouseton Carnival on his way to a secret party. Each time Mickey open and closes a door, he ventures into a different universe crafted by one of 40 guest artists.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

This tale is more of a visual treat compared to other Disney comics since the art itself tells the story rather than words. Styles range from the classic comic strip style to more exaggerated designs you would find in something like MAD or an underground comic. For someone like me, this was a real pleasure to go through, even finding some friends who have contributed to this book.

There is something for everyone, the art styles showcased in this book are truly diverse and I do wish more projects like these happen in the future. Here are a few of my favourites along with the artist associated with it if you wish to see more of their work.

Artist : Dav

Artists : Batem and Nicholas Pothier (Caktus)

Artist : Massimo Fecchi (Egmont)

Artist :  Jose Luis Munuera (The Campbells)

Artist : Antonio Lapone (Gentlemind)

This is only a sample of what you can find in Mickey All-Stars, the book is now available on digital and psychical shops from Fantagraphics. This would be the perfect stocking filler for any Mickey Mouse fan in your household.
