Yes, Chef: This Graphic Novel Continuing Tiana’s Story is Worth a Read
This title has none of the bayou magic of Princess and the Frog, but this continuation of Tiana’s story has a magic of its own. Set during the Harlem Revival, it sees our titular character take leave from her restaurant to learn under a master of the culinary arts up north.
Originally released as a Random House hardcover in 2024, under the title Tiana and the Magic of Harlem: A Graphic Novel, I’m glad to see it reach a larger audience through the reduced price point of paperback. This time it’s being distributed by Papercutz, as part of a larger series of “Adventure Journals.”
The comic sees Tiana torn between nightlife and her new friend, another apprentice, and the demands of Chef Leroy. It’s a wonderfully written story of gaining and losing trust, and the responsibility that comes with accomplishment. It does a great job of expanding on her story, without confining future stories or sequels. The illustrations share a lush recollection of a vibrant era in African American culture, in a similar style to the movie while still distinct to the artist hired. The setting that both supply is frankly educational, and unintentionally well-timed for America’s 250th.
