“Deceptive and not worth it”: MINISO Faces Backlash to Star Wars Pop-Up

For the last few weeks, MINISO has been running targeted ads towards Toronto-area Star Wars fans, in promotion of their pop-up opening today at Square One Shopping Centre, Mississauga. The first 400 to sign up to the Miniso Discord server through the link, it was implied, would get a special Stormtrooper toy.

On the server, it was eventually clarified that there was a form to fill out, and the first 400 to use that, to be posted on a mystery day. Early this morning, MINISO posted the form, but with the added requirement of posting publicly on “FaceBook,” TikTok or Instagram using their hashtag, about your favourite Star Wars moment, submit that through the form.

User Asteroid-onion has replied:

Forgive me, but this is the first time we are hearing about the requirement to post to social, now. Previously it was “join the discord server”, then it turned into “fill out the form”. Now it’s “post to social and show proof”. Sorry. I love Star Wars, but this is deceptive af and not worth it. I was going to stop by the pop up, but you’ve lost me as a customer. My loss, I guess.

Meanwhile, others are asking whether they can claim it at other locations. Merchandise is exclusive to this pop-up, and earlier in the week, many were expressing frustration on their visit to stores around the GTA who had no idea that there even was a Star Wars product line.

The post went up at 6:09 am ET, the local time zone, with Asteroid-onion speaking for frustrated users a 7:20 am. As of 9:46 am, MINISO has yet to comment, despite the account replying to posts around the clock normally. DisKingdom will update this article, if and when MINISO publicly replies.

The pop-up remains open until June 21.
