Two Days Until New Disney Store Opens in Kyoto

Mickey as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice anchors the entrance of the newest location of Disney Store in Japan, starting April 28.

Kyōto Station is the second-largest train hub in the nation, and one of the largest buildings overall. It includes 220-store shopping centre Kyoto Porta, a hotel, movie theatre, department store, and local government offices spread over 15 floors.

Kyoto Porta is now the home of a Disney Store with ceiling and floors adorned with cherry blossom petal motifs, and shoji-style decoration specific to this area of Japan.

The opening day stuffed toys and stuffed keychains are fantastically specific: Mickey and Goofy dressed as two people from the Heian period of classical Japanese history, more than a millennia ago. I’m not quite sure which is which, but one is monk-turned-rogue warrior Benkei, and the other is Ushiwakamaru, a samurai commander from the noble line of the Minamoto clan.

Until April 30, visitors can earn five times the Disney Store Club Points on their purchases. There’s a limited number of tote bags, to be given to those spending ¥5000 or more, and a limited edition shop card.
