Interview with Darkwing Duck Writer Amanda Deibert
Darkwing Duck has had a long run in comic books from 1991 to the present through several runs at Disney’s short lived division Disney Comics, the Disney Adventures magazine, Marvel’s The Disney Afternoon title, Boom’s run in 2010 and the short lived Canadian publisher Joe Books’ run in 2016 that lasted for 8 issues.
The terror that flaps in the night laid dormant for many years until the rights to the Disney Afternoon were given to Dynamite Comics where they started with a Gargoyles title but it was not long until a Darkwing Duck title burst into stores everywhere with its high octane writing and Splatter Pheonix approved artwork. Dynamite have since done a few different short runs with the franchise from a 8 issue solo title to a 5 issue run featuring the Justice Ducks and a 8 issue run featuring Darkwing Duck’s foe Negaduck.
Late last year, Dynamite announced a Kickstarter to publish every single Gargoyles comic book throughout its three runs into a true collector’s edition with big hardcover books for each run. Disney fans knew that a Darkwing Duck Kickstarter was not far behind, there was so much content that they could pull from and possibly do multiple Kickstarters since our favorite hero had quite a lot of titles to his name.
The Kickstarter has since revealed that it will contain the original 1991 Disney Comics run, the Darkwing Duck stories from Marvel’s The Disney Afternoon run and all three Dynamite runs across three books. The missing 35 Disney Adventures stories, the legendary Boom and Joe Books runs and the 2 stories from France could easily fill its own Kickstarter if it ever happens in the future.
I am here today to bring you the writer of the first Dynamite run of Darkwing Duck, Amanda Deibert. You may know her from various youth orientated titles through DC, Scholastic and even some big titles for DC and Marvel.
How did you get your start on Darkwing Duck ? Was there an audition process where you had to write a pitch or were you selected from the start ?
I was asked from the beginning and it was a very enthusiastic “yes” from me. I did then have to pitch them some ideas and they went with the one I loved most, so the whole process was marvelous.
What were your previous experiences with the franchise ?
My only previous experience with Darkwing Duck was as a child who watched the show. It was really fun to revisit the universe.
Was there anything you wanted to include in the Darkwing Duck comic that could not be included ?
Yes, I have an additional pitch that takes place in the negaverse, but I have not been able to do that one yet.
Who is your favorite Darkwing Duck character ?
Morgana Macawber
Who is your favourite Darkwing Duck hero or villian to write for ?
They are all so much fun! Darkwing himself is my favorite to write though. He is the terror that flaps in the night.
If you could do another story for the comic, what kind of story would you like to do ?
I’d love to revisit my Negaverse idea, but that’s all I will say.
( The Negaverse is a concept from an episode of the original show where everyone who is evil in the show is good and vice versa, Honker is a little bit of a dictator in this universe)
How do you feel about your Darkwing Duck stories making their way around the world ?
It’s incredible. There was no way I could have anticipated the huge response. It’s overwhelming and delightful and amazing.
Could you tell me about what will be inside of the 3 books in the Darkwing Duck Kickstarter ? Will there be comics from the previous runs of the character ?
Yes. From what I understand it’s a bunch of favorites.
What projects are you currently working on ?
Right now I am working on a Teen Titans Go! Graphic novel and Batman and Scooby-Doo for DC and a new Rocket and Groot graphic novel for Marvel/Scholastic and a volume 2 of “Death mask” for Stom King Comics and another secret project I can’t talk about. Oh, and also the new Hot Wheels: Let’s Race! Preschool show on Netflix.
Please feel free to check out Amanda’s run on the Dynamite Darkwing Duck comic through digital comic book shop services such as Kindle or at your local comic book store. Her run will also be included in the third volume featured in the Darkwing Duck Kickstarter if you wish to own a version suited for the biggest Darkwing Duck fan.
