“Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” Episode of Prop Culture Now Online
One of the first series on Disney+ when it launched was a gem called Prop Culture. “Fan service” in the best way, its search for original props from modern classics provided a unique angle, beyond the average behind-the-scenes. The artifacts spark memories from the cast and crew that host and producer Dan Lanigan interviewed.
But the series wasn’t renewed beyond its first season, and removed from Disney+ in 2023 as part of “a tax write off.”
As an “experiment in fair use,” Lanigan has begun posting episodes of the series on his YouTube, Cinema Relics. The first release, last week, was of The Chronicles of Narnia.
It’s wonderful to see the tactile nature of traditional special effects, with both a stop-motion puppet and remnants of the large version of Antie and other items. Stop motion animation legend Phil Tippett demonstrates his technique with a scorpion, and with Disney Archives’ permission, Academy Award–winning visual effects artist Martin Meunier restores the shrink ray to its original look.
When the episode first premiered, WhatsOnDisneyPlus.com gave it 4 out of 5 stars:
Dan’s passion for the film and props really highlights how the right team behind a show can completely make or break it. This isn’t just a fluff piece that you’d find on the Blu-Ray extras, it’s a decent documentary about the film. Great stuff! If you love the movie or just love to know how movies are made, this series is a must see.
