Day Of The Tentacle Remastered Review

Day Of The Tentacle is one of the most popular video games ever created and its traveled through time through its own portaloo from 1993 to bring back memories of a long time ago and entertain a new generation.  The game has been given a overhaul with great looking graphics that bring it up today’s standards and if you wanna go back to the past, its possible at the switch of a button, to fly back to the look of 1993.

The main story is focused around three teenagers who get trapped in three different time zones across 400 years, but all of which are located in the same house.  Bernard Bernoulli is located in today, Hoagie has gone back 200 years to interact with American icons like George Washington while Laverne are stuck in the future, dealing with the aftereffects of an alien invasion.  Using a time portal in a toilet, the friends must send items back and forth to one another, moving the story along, trying to stop an alien invasion from the Tentacles.

I’ve never played this game before, so I’m not full of nostalgia over what this game was like in the early 90’s, my PC at the time was still on massive floppy discs and wasn’t capable of playing this game and with consoles like the Sega Megadrive & SNES (my brother’s) in our house, once I brought a new game, there wouldn’t be another till my Birthday or Christmas.

This game is pretty challenging mentally, some of the puzzles can take a while and in the old days, you would have had to find a friend at school or work, who was ahead of you, now a quick Google search does the trick much easier, though less rewarding.

The game has been remastered and brought out on Playstation 4 & PS Vita along with the PC version, I’ve been playing on both the PS4 and the PS Vita versions, as this game has the benefit of cross play between devices.  It looks really good on both versions and I found playing the Vita version was much more enjoyable because I could play it, not too differently to how I’d play a game like this on my iPad, using the touch screen to move things around.  The menu and interface have also been overhauled from the original to make it easier for new players.

And that comparison to today’s modern, point and click games on touch screen devices,  this is so much more superior, its an original story and if it was released today, it would be locked away behind timers and in-game purchases.  I almost could imagine having to wait before using the time machines, so I’m more than happy that this is an old school game, one purchase does it all.

This game has also been given some bonus features including an audio commentary, concept art and also Maniac Mansion, which was Day of the Tentacle’s predecessor.  So a bonus game is thrown in for good measure.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered is a perfect download for those players who want a trip down memory lane and for those who missed it the first time or want a introduction to this style of game.  This isn’t just a simple port, they’ve made the original better and I’ve really enjoyed playing it.
