Big Changes Coming To The Marvel Heroes Omega Loot Boxes
With Marvel Heroes Omega set to be released on the Xbox One and PS4 on June 30th, the team behind the game have made an announcement to changes to Loot Boxes and Variant Costumes. This will run similar to how many other games out there currently work, including Overwatch.
The changes to the loot boxes will kick off on the same day as the launch and will increase the chances of receiving costumes and will see some new hero-specific Ultimate Upgrade Tokens and Experience Tokens added to loot boxes. Also recenetly, the team added boxes of 10, 25, and 50 Marvelous Essence. This will be in addition to changes to costume availability as individual costumes will no longer be sold directly for Gs within the in-game store. Costumes will instead become available as part of current and future loot boxes.
It was also confirmed that Players will earn one-time boxes at 5, 12, 15 and 30, then one box for every level 60. These Marvelous Loot Boxes will be granted to players retroactively during our scheduled server maintenance on June 30, 2017.
Gazillion are planning on rotating the costumes available in the loot boxes out every few months, but it was also revealed that players looking for particular costumes after this update can use their Marvelous Essence (which is given in each loot box) to acquire them directly from the Marvelous Essence vendor Moondragon, who is located in all Hubs. She will carry all costumes in the loot boxes available at that time. Which is a good way of allowing players to pick up the costumes they want, but there is the element of risk in getting enough Essence, compared to just being able to purchase them instantly with “G’s” (real money).
Loot boxes will also now hold costumes for these rarity tables: Rare, Epic, Cosmic, and Ultra Cosmic! And should a player receive a duplicate costume within a loot box, they will receive a set amount of Marvelous Essence in place of that costume.
As you might expect, this news didn’t go down to well with fans on social media, reddit or the offical forums, many fans questioning how adding costumes to loot boxes is better for them. With Marvel Heroes Game Designer, Brian Waggoner replying to fans saying “After reviewing 4 years of pc data and over a month of console data, the a la carte model used in the past just isnt sustainable.” And added “The major disconnect with players on this is that those on the forums/reddit/etc tell us how terrible boxes are, yet the sell very well”.
With the “Free To Play” model, the game might be “free”, but there has to be some paid aspects to fund the development of the game and it does look like Marvel Heroes Omega is changing many of the ways it did business on PC. It’s unclear if these changes will come to the PC version as well.
